This was weird. I forgot to post it this morning.

I was on a family vacation with parents and brother. We were in a small SUV. From outside of the car it looked as if the back row of seats faced backwards and Hannah Prince was in there (but not when I was in the car). We stopped at a ‘Nature Center’ which turned out to be an enormous water park with overlapping swimming pools and miles of waterslides. I swam around for a while.

Then I went into the center and into a huge lecture hall. It was dark and you could only see a few feet in front of you. A penguin-looking bird gave me a lecture on mathematics and reasoning. Then he went on an aside about how he used to live in the lecture hall along with hundreds of tall yellow birds. He tried to lecture them but they didn’t like him. He made sure that his chalkboard was straight across the room from a door, so that if he saw a puffin bird he could grab it quickly and run straight to the door and let it escape so that it would not get persecuted by the yellow birds.

Then I went back out into the waterpark and slid down a very wide slide partway. I decided to stop and wait for Lyle (my brother) but he never rounded the bend and people got mad at me for getting in the way of other people. Then I walked out of the center and saw Kevin Zhang in the parking lot with a tennis racquet.

Tell this to your psych teacher and see what he/she says.

I used to like school. Last year even. It was something to do and I enjoyed going to class and learning things. I still like to learn, sure, but this year going to most classes (except Calc some days and APUSH some days) is just frustrating. It means more reading which means more work and more time spent building up to a grade which is just one of many in the long-term. I spend maybe 45 minutes on the internet in the evening (which I think is reasonable… I check email, tumblr, and facebook, mostly just for communication) and a half-hour or so in the morning. I could slim that down but that’s not the point. I’m barely even doing extracurricular stuff and still getting 6-7 hours of sleep a night (which, in reality, is not enough). Homework regularly takes 3.5+ hours. Because of the ridiculous workload and pressure to get everything into my head (remarkable that it all fits in, isn’t it? anyway…) the enjoyment of learning the material has left. Now I have more and more stuff that I don’t want to care about but my conscience makes me anyway. Very infuriating.

It’s harder for me to relax at all. I end up just schmoozing rather than doing anything of value in my “free time.” Too much mental blockage from schoolwork, so I end up a couch potato.

Joe has swimming… Mike has basketball… Evan’s on RA duty… just me at breakfast.

I got a ROM of FFTA because I don’t have the cartridge here with me at school. My oldest save file is still on there and it’s pushing 300 hours of play. I’ve got the mission system stuck in a rut though so there’s no chance I can complete everything on it but that’s alright. RPG games work so well on the Gameboy Advance… Fire Emblem (both English ones) was awesome, and both Golden Sun games were just fantastic. That was my triad of swords and magic in the 4th through 7th grade, basically.

I hope nobody watches me when I put the comforter cover on in...

Suddenly! I question why I’m thinking about applying to art school. Industrial Design is what interests me, yeah, but it’s not a prerequisite to have a degree in I.D. to become one, no. But to be an engineer or mathematician or anything else, almost definitely. So instead of focusing on art schools I’ll be looking at more general institutions, ones that offer engineering and math, along with arts and liberal arts. Smorgasbord of stuff. That said, a RISD/Brown dual-degree would still be fantastic…

I’ve overachieved my reading resolution—6 books read, working on the 7th! I’m not a huge...

I’ve overachieved my reading resolution—6 books read, working on the 7th! I’m not a huge reader but I’m happy I got through five, much more than 2008. I started Sputnik Sweetheart today (thinking about a cucumber in a fridge) and love it. K’s an interesting narrator. That made me think of this:

I swear they’re the exact same in my head. Theeeennn I thought about P and K as certain people in my life, one relationship getting better and one non-existent one falling down.

So glad this week is over. Now it’s break and I can actually do stuff. Watched Objectified in the dungeon while skipping the sit-down dinner (so now I’m really hungry). Good documentary—information about how people go about designing things and the processes. I dislike the art part of it. Maybe I can’t “appreciate art” like I could but so much of it just seems like bullshit. Too many layers of faux-information or context to dot make good art. Nothing should be arbitrary. Don’t make something if you don’t know anything. On that note I did not perform well on my drawing quiz test thing today. Mrs. Goodale doesn’t like how abstract I like to go and then demands more creativity from me. Part of that is my actual skill, part of that is how I look at art in general, and a little bit of that is her. But I’m naïve and don’t know anything.

I’m a little nervous that I’m putting too much time/thought into academics and my scrappy portfolio and not enough into extracurriculars and community service. If I don’t go to art school where will they want me?
